Nebraska's first execution in over 20 years is only two weeks away, and we wanted to make you aware of some key opportunities to speak out against this wasteful, secretive, and careless government overreach. The daily vigils in front of the governor's mansion have been a big success so far and will continue until the execution on August 14th. The vigil is every weekday from 12:00 to 1:00 and all are welcome to attend. The Omaha World-Herald and Lincoln Journal-Star have both written articles about the vigil recently. We would love to see you there! NADP will also be hosting a rally on the day of the execution (Tuesday, August 14th) on the north steps of the capitol building, beginning at 5:00. All are welcome; feel free to bring a home-made sign if you'd like. You can also share the Facebook event page for the rally to help spread the word among your network. The Department of Correctional Services plans to conduct the lethal injection at 10:00 a.m. Barring some kind of last-minute stay, the execution will already be over by the time the rally begins. It's being held at that time both so that more people will be able to attend and to avoid a circus-like atmosphere that has happened outside the penitentiary before and during past executions. If you can't make it to Lincoln, there is one other thing that's very helpful and that anyone can do: write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. Every paper - big and small - will be covering this execution, and it's critical that the general public knows that many Nebraskans don't want this to happen. Letters to the editor are a great way to open a dialogue in your community, and if you need any help with how to submit one or what to say, we would be happy to help you!
